One of the most popular supermarket apple varieties. The sweet flavour of ripe Gala apples eaten straight from the tree is quite a surprise compared to supermarket examples.
Gala is probably the easiest of the supermarket apples to grow in the UK garden, but it is not without problems. Whilst it grows well and crops reliably, growing Gala successfully means becoming familiar with one of the main fungal diseases of apples, scab!

Gala is in flowering group 4. It is self-sterile and needs a pollination partner nearby. The following varieties will pollinate Gala:
Important: advice about pollination
Gala is primarily a warm-climate apple, widely grown in South Africa, Chile, New Zealand, and France. It can be grown successfully in the south, central, and east of the UK, and crops well.
The main problem is that Gala is rather prone to scab - you will have to be prepared to spray, or take a chance. Scab appears as dark brown or black patches and affects both leaves and fruit, but it varies from year to year. Symptoms are normally visible from early summer onwards. You can reduce the risk of infection by scrupulously clearing up leaf litter in the autumn, as the fungal spores over-winter on the ground. Whilst scab reduces yields and affects appearance, lightly-affected fruit can still be used for domestic purposes.
